Tom Denton was onboard the Canopus from 1987 to 1991. He was a ETC (SS/SW) in W-6 Weapons QA.
He was able to get aboard the Canopus in October 2001 as part of a scavenger team from the USS Torsk (SS-423), a sub museum in Baltimore Maryland. The Canopus was at Fleet Reserve in James River Virginia at the time.
He made a hour and half VHS video tape as he and the others with him took an extensive walk through the Canopus. Lighting was pretty poor with just a flood light on the camera and some flashlights, but the result is the best anyone of us will once again get to walk the decks and enter her compartments.
The full video file is broken up into seventeen 5 minute clips with each clip 25mb in size. If your browser-video player allows, hopefully you can stream it. Otherwise depending on the speed of your Internet connection, it make take under a minute to a very long time for it to download first before it will start playing.
Alternatively, the video is available as a high-quality high-resolution DVD disc. It can be ordered through the Ship's Store for $15.
