REUNION 2002 HELD IN BILOXI, MS

The Canopus association held its third reunion on Sept. 5-8, 2002. Around 130 members and guests attended the gala affair. It was held in the deep south, along the Mississippi gulf coast, at the Biloxi Beach Resort. The weather was mixed but acceptable.

The reunion was organized and run by shipmate Ron Slank. Organized tours of New Orleans were well attended. In addition a fine meal and music by disk jockey and door prizes, was enjoyed by all.

Our every two year membership meeting was held during the 4 day affair as set by our by-laws. The minutes of the meeting will be posted soon, by our secretary, Rick Retin. Rick is also our assoc. photographer and he will soon be posting his pictures from the reunion, here on site. One highlight during the dinner activities was a brief appearance at the podium by Captain John Eaton, the second CO of Canopus. The Captain stated how Canopus was one of his most enjoyable commands, and the record refits accomplished by Canopus during his time aboard. He was given a well deserved, standing round of applause after his talk. We thank Captain Eaton for attending and look forward to seeing him again in 2004 in Reno, NV.

Shipmate Retin's slide show after the meal, with photos of Rota, Spain was well received and enjoyed by all in attendance. Rick was assisted in his narration by a new member, Fernando Iglesias . Shipmate Fernando, born in Spain and now a "Counsel of Spain" added local flavor to the narration as only he could. Welcome aboard the Association Fernando.

The Association thanks all who attended and hopes to see everyone in two years in Reno.

OLD NEWS

Welcome to our new web site As with any new site there are always bugs in the first posting to the web. These are expected and are usually easily fixed. The main problem is always what is called (cross browser compatibly) . This simply means that all browses such as Netscape and Internet explorer, read the site's code slightly different. Usually you will notice columns or pictures that don't align properly ext.. If the problem persists over time send us a note on our contact page.

Since the last reunion in Norfolk the association has become incorporated in Rhode Island. We are now the USS CANOPUS ASSOCIATION Inc. It was decided at the meeting that incorporation will facilitate operations in the future and add legitimacy to the assoc. We are incorporated as a nonprofit assoc. All papers are on file with the Assoc. secretary and are open to view by all members upon request.

The next reunion will be in Biloxi Mississippi in Sept. of 2002, so all members are urged to keep this in mind. The last reunion was a great success and everyone had a great time. We look forward to 2002 as hopefully more new members will sign up and attend. The reunion coordinators will soon post their tentative plans on the news page, so check occasional for the latest details.

The Assoc. web site is sadly lacking archives (especially photos) after 1970. So get those old shoe boxes open and send us some of your favorite shots. The best method to send pictures are one that have been digitized. Photo's ( under 1 mega bytes ) can be sent in by e-mail. Large file photo's can be sent in on a CD or on numerous floppy disk. Jpeg format is preferred but not necessary. Also copies of photo's by mail are fine. Every effort will be made to return originals, but cannot be guaranteed. We are also lacking Helmsman issues.
